Case Study: “Sunflowers Music Video”
AI-Generated Environments for a Live-Action Music Video
“Sunflowers” is a music video for Newcastle band LRF. The concept called for the band performing across a series of evolving, emotionally driven environments – all shifting in sync with the emotional arc of the song.
This kind of visual scope would not have been achievable through traditional production alone.
AI made this video possible, but it didn’t make the video. It generated background plates, animated textures, environmental elements, that then needed to be directed, refined, composited, graded, and edited with the same care as any traditional production. The creative direction, the technical compositing, and the editorial decisions are what turned AI outputs into a finished piece of work.
How It Was Made

Shoot
The band was filmed individually performing against a green screen.

AI Generation
AI image generation tools created background plates. These stills were then animated using AI video tools to introduce movement and engaging transitions between scenes.

Compositing and Grade
Everything was composited in DaVinci Resolve using Fusion. Chroma keying, motion tracking, colour matching, film grain, and colour grading unified the AI and live-action elements.

Before any AI tool is opened, the project needs a clear creative brief. What environments, visual styles, or effects are we trying to achieve? What’s the narrative or emotional arc? What’s realistic to achieve with AI, and where does traditional production make more sense?

Using tools for AI image and video generation, we produce the visual elements the project calls for. Background environments, animated textures, stylised sequences, or entirely AI-generated shots. Prompt engineering, reference images, and iterative refinement are key to getting usable results.

AI-generated elements almost always need compositing work to sit properly alongside real footage. Chroma keying, motion tracking, colour matching, edge refinement, and spill suppression – all done in DaVinci Resolve.
